Beginner Two-Step Lessons in Austin: Where to Start

Updated weekly. Last reviewed May 1, 2026.

Austin has more two-step lesson options than any city in Texas. If you're a complete beginner, the question isn't whether you can find a class. It's which class fits your schedule, your budget, and how fast you want to be on the dance floor.

Here's the honest rundown of every beginner two-step lesson in Austin, who teaches it, what it costs, and which one to pick depending on what you're after.

The two main beginner lesson nights in Austin

Wednesday: Donn's Depot, 7:30pm (FREE)

Beginner Two-Step Lesson taught by Double or Nothing Two-Step. No partner needed, no experience required, no cover charge, tips welcome. Followed by Frank Cavitt & The Honky-Tonk Doctors at 8:30pm. Donn's Depot is at 1600 W 5th St in West Austin. The crowd is friendly, the floor is wood and waxed, and most beginners are dancing comfortably by the end of the lesson.

This is the easiest place in Austin to start. RSVP to the Wednesday lesson at Donn's Depot.

Tuesday: Sagebrush, 6pm Beginner ($10 cash)

Beginner Two-Step Lesson taught by Double or Nothing Two-Step at Sagebrush, 5500 S Congress Ave. Followed by Intermediate at 7pm and live music at 8pm. $10 cash gets you the lesson and the night. Sagebrush is a working honky-tonk with multiple stages. The dance floor opens up after the lesson and stays going until midnight.

Best for people who want to learn AND dance the same night. RSVP to the Tuesday lesson at Sagebrush.

Other ways to learn beginner two-step in Austin

Private lessons (1-on-1 or small group)

If group lessons feel too crowded or you want to learn faster, private lessons are the move. Book directly with Double or Nothing - they offer 1-on-1 and small-group privates. Most students go from total beginner to dancing confidently in 2-3 private lessons. Book a private lesson.

Studio Series workshops (4 weeks, all levels)

Double or Nothing also runs 4-week workshops in a studio setting for people who want a structured curriculum and the same dance partners every week. Good if you're starting from zero and want a clear progression. See the Studio Series schedule.

Online courses (learn at home)

If your schedule doesn't work for in-person lessons, the online course at Honky-Tonk Dance School covers the same beginner curriculum on video. Use code SOCIAL for 20% off.

What to expect at your first beginner lesson

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. Jeans are fine. Cowboy boots are great if you have them - leather soles slide better than rubber on a wood floor - but normal dress shoes work. Avoid sneakers if you can; they grab the floor and make turns harder.

You don't need a partner. Lessons rotate partners every couple of minutes so everyone dances with everyone. If you came with someone, you'll get to dance with them too, but you'll also dance with strangers, which is half the point.

Plan to stay after the lesson. The whole reason these lessons are at honky-tonks is so you can practice with the live band that comes on next. Most beginners go home that same night having danced for two hours, not just the 30 minutes of instruction.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to learn the basic two-step?

Most beginners can do the basic step pattern (quick-quick-slow-slow or slow-slow-quick-quick depending on style) by the end of one lesson. Feeling comfortable on a crowded dance floor takes 3-5 lessons. Real fluency takes a few months of regular dancing.

Do I need a partner to take a beginner lesson?

No. Every beginner lesson in Austin rotates partners. Solo dancers are welcome and common.

What's the difference between Texas Two-Step and Austin Honky-Tonk Two-Step?

Texas Two-Step (also called Progressive) uses quick-quick-slow-slow timing and travels the dance floor in a counterclockwise loop. It's what you'll see at Broken Spoke, Gruene Hall, and Coupland Dance Hall. Austin Honky-Tonk Two-Step uses slow-slow-quick-quick timing, comes from a swing background, and dances more in place. It's what you'll see at Sagebrush, White Horse, Donn's Depot, and Sam's Town Point. Read the full comparison.

How much does a beginner two-step lesson in Austin cost?

The Wednesday Donn's Depot lesson is FREE (tips welcome). The Tuesday Sagebrush lesson is $10 cash and covers both the lesson and the night of music. Private lessons start around $80 per session. Studio Series is around $120 for 4 weeks.

Where should I take my first lesson if I'm completely new?

Wednesday at Donn's Depot. It's free, the room is welcoming, the music after is approachable, and the lesson is structured for absolute beginners. Show up at 7:15pm to grab a spot, and stay for Frank Cavitt & The Honky-Tonk Doctors at 8:30pm.
