Austin Two-Step Classes: Every Class, Every Level

Updated weekly. Last reviewed May 1, 2026.

Whether you've never danced a step or you've been on Austin floors for ten years, there's a class in town that fits where you are. Here's the complete list of two-step classes in Austin, organized by level, with what each one costs and where it meets.

Beginner classes (start here if you're new)

Wednesday FREE Beginner at Donn's Depot

Beginner Two-Step Lesson taught by Double or Nothing Two-Step at Donn's Depot, 1600 W 5th St. Starts at 7:30pm. No partner needed. No cover. Tips welcome. Followed by Frank Cavitt & The Honky-Tonk Doctors. The most accessible beginner option in Austin. RSVP.

Tuesday Beginner at Sagebrush

Beginner Two-Step Lesson at 6pm at Sagebrush, 5500 S Congress Ave. $10 cash covers both the lesson and the music after. Followed by Intermediate at 7pm and live music with Hayden Butler at 8pm.

Intermediate classes (when you've got the basics)

Tuesday Intermediate at Sagebrush, 7pm

Picks up right after the beginner lesson. Adds turns, footwork variations, and floor navigation. $10 cash gets you into both classes plus the music.

Sunday Intermediate at Sagebrush, 6pm

The bigger Sunday class. Comes after the 5pm Advanced and runs until live music starts at 7pm. Great for people who can do the basic step but want to clean up timing and lead/follow.

Advanced classes (for working dancers)

Sunday Advanced at Sagebrush, 5pm

The hardest regular class in Austin. Multiple-partner choreography, advanced turns, complex patterns. Show up if you've been dancing for at least a few months and want to level up.

Private lessons (1-on-1 or small group)

Better for couples, gift recipients, wedding parties, or anyone who learns faster in a focused setting. Double or Nothing Two-Step offers privates with their full instructor team. Most students go from beginner to confident in 2-3 sessions. Book a private lesson.

Studio Series (4-week workshops)

Multi-week workshops in a studio setting, all levels. Same instructor, same group, same time each week. Built for people who want a curriculum and consistent progress instead of dropping into different bar lessons. Studio Series schedule.

Online courses

If your schedule doesn't work for in-person, the Honky-Tonk Dance School online course covers the same beginner and intermediate curriculum on video. Use code SOCIAL for 20% off.

Bachelorette, corporate, and event lessons

For groups of 10 to 1,000, Double or Nothing teaches private group lessons for bachelorette parties, corporate team-building, weddings, family reunions, birthdays, and any other group event. They come to you. Hire DON for events.

Where to practice after class

Lessons stack onto live music for a reason. After Tuesday Sagebrush, the band starts at 8pm and goes til midnight. After Wednesday Donn's Depot, Frank Cavitt plays til closing. After Sunday Sagebrush, Matt Tedder plays from 7pm. The whole point is to dance the same night you learned.

For other practice nights with live music, check the full Austin two-step schedule - 17 venues, every night of the week, updated daily.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what level class to take?

If you've never danced or it's been over a year, take Beginner. If you can do the basic step pattern without thinking about it, you're ready for Intermediate. Advanced is for dancers with several months of regular practice who want to learn complex turns and choreography.

Can I drop into any class without registering?

Yes. All Double or Nothing public classes are drop-in. Show up, pay at the door (cash for venue lessons), join the rotation. RSVPs help with capacity planning but aren't required.

Are Austin two-step classes good for couples?

Yes. About a third of every class is couples, a third is solo dancers, and a third is groups of friends. Partner rotation is built into the lesson so couples dance together AND meet other dancers in the room.

Do I have to know the music to take a class?

No. Lessons are taught with practice songs at the right tempo for the level. The live band comes on after, and the band's sound is part of why people love these venues. You'll learn what works on the dance floor by being on it.

What's the cheapest way to learn two-step in Austin?

The Wednesday Donn's Depot lesson is free. Tip the instructors a few dollars if you can, and bring cash for drinks. After that lesson you can dance for the rest of the night with no additional cover.
