Austin Birthday Party Two-Step Lessons

By Vanessa Vaught, Double or Nothing Two-Step · Austin Chronicle Best Two-Stepping Lessons

Birthdays past 25 need a better option than "another dinner." A two-step lesson is the activity that actually makes your birthday feel like a celebration - and gives your friends something to talk about besides their jobs. Here's how it works.

Private group lessons bring a birthday energy you can't get from another dinner.

Why two-step for a birthday party

Your friends don't need another dinner. They need something to do together. Something active, something genuinely fun, something they'll remember. A two-step lesson turns 20 friends standing around holding drinks into a dance floor of people actually hanging out.

We've taught 30ths, 40ths, 50ths, 60ths, 70ths, and yes, one 90th (she wore boots, she led, she was incredible). Birthday lessons work for every decade of life except maybe toddler birthdays, and we'd probably figure that out too if you asked nicely.

How it works

Location

We come to you. Your house. Your Airbnb. Your rented event space. Your favorite honky-tonk before the regular crowd arrives. Your backyard if the weather cooperates and your patio is big enough. We just need floor space (not carpet) and a way to play music.

Group size

4 people or 100. Intimate dinner parties to full-venue celebrations. We scale instructor count to match.

Duration

60 minutes is typical. 45 minutes works for groups where the lesson is part of a bigger evening. 90 minutes is great for groups that want to really learn something.

A typical birthday party lesson

  • 10 min — Warm welcome, confidence build, foundation
  • 20 min — Basic two-step with partner rotation (so your friends actually meet each other)
  • 15 min — A crowd-pleasing spin or dip move that looks harder than it is
  • 15 min — Dance party with music we bring or your playlist

We'll do a shoutout to the birthday person. They get the first dance, the last dance, and whichever songs they want in between.

Ways we customize birthday lessons

  • Birthday person's favorite song — We'll work a specific song into the lesson and everyone dances to it
  • "Surprise the birthday person" lesson — Friends book the lesson and the birthday person walks into a room full of people who've been learning moves for them
  • Multi-part evening — Lesson at a private home, then transportation to a real honky-tonk to use what you learned
  • Theme customization — Western theme, Nashville theme, Austin theme, Dolly Parton theme (we are very pro-Dolly)

Pricing

  • Small birthday group (up to 15 people, 60 min): $300-$500
  • Medium birthday group (15-40 people, 60-90 min): $500-$900
  • Large birthday bash (40-100 people): $900-$1,400
