What it's actually like

Gruene Hall has been open since 1878, making it the oldest operating dance hall in Texas. That's not a marketing claim - it's a fact. The building is original. The dance floor has been danced on for nearly 150 years. Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Jerry Jeff Walker, and George Strait have all played here. The walls know it.

The hall sits in the historic Gruene district of New Braunfels, about 35 miles south of Austin - close enough for a day trip, beautiful enough to justify staying longer. The Guadalupe River is nearby, the Gristmill restaurant next door serves decent Texan food, and the whole area has a character that's been carefully preserved rather than Disney-fied.

Walking into Gruene Hall is a genuine experience. The ceiling is high. The walls are covered in posters and memorabilia going back decades. The stage at one end is simple and right. The bar runs along one side. The dance floor fills the middle. It's exactly what a dance hall should be and the fact that it's been exactly this for nearly 150 years makes it sacred.

Inside TipGruene Hall is the Texas dance hall pilgrimage. Every dancer should go at least once, and most go back repeatedly. Wednesday through Sunday have live music - check the calendar for the acts that will be on when you're planning to go, and make a day of it in the Gruene district.

Two-stepping at Gruene Hall

The Gruene Hall dance floor is one of the most significant dance floors in America. Original wide-plank wood, worn by generations, in a space that was designed specifically for community dancing. The counterclockwise traffic pattern is deeply ingrained here - the regulars have been doing it this way for a very long time and the floor moves naturally when the crowd knows what it's doing.

The style is Texas two-step at its most traditional. The music tends toward classic Texas country - honky-tonk, Western swing, Texas singer-songwriter - and the crowd ranges from complete beginners on a weekend outing to dancers who've been coming here for thirty years.

For BeginnersGruene Hall is both intimidating and welcoming for beginners - intimidating because of its history and reputation, welcoming because the whole point of a community dance hall is that everyone dances. If you know your basic two-step, you belong on this floor. Period.
