Austin is the best city in America for honky-tonk dancing. Here is everything you need to know to get out there - venues by neighborhood, how lessons work, what to wear, and what to expect on your first night out.
After a Double or Nothing Two-Step lesson at Sagebrush — South Congress, Austin
What is two-step?
The honky-tonk two-step is a partner dance done to country and western music. Couples travel counter-clockwise around the dance floor in a slow-slow-quick-quick pattern, starting on the slow beat. It is one of the most accessible partner dances in existence: the basic step can be learned in under ten minutes, and you do not need to bring a partner to practice it.
The version taught and danced in Austin is specifically the honky-tonk two-step - it starts on the slow beat (like jitterbug timing), and is danced to live country music in real honky-tonks, not to pop country in a line-dance bar. That distinction matters. If you have taken a two-step lesson somewhere else and felt like the timing was off, this is likely why.
First timer? You do not need a partner, prior dance experience, or cowboy boots. Sagebrush Tuesdays at 6 pm or Donn's Depot Wednesdays at 7:30 pm - show up solo and you will leave knowing the step.
The Austin venues
Most of Austin's two-step scene happens in bars - real honky-tonks and dive bars where the live music is the whole point and the dancing follows naturally. These are not event spaces or dedicated dance venues. They are bars where two-stepping is part of the culture.
A bar on South Congress with live music most nights and an outdoor stage. The biggest floor in the city. Double or Nothing teaches here Tuesday and Sunday evenings.
Far south Austin dive with live music seven nights a week. Small, cash-only energy, packed on weekends. One of the best spots in the city for actual honky-tonk.
A bar built from decommissioned railroad cars on West 5th. Frank Cavitt and the Honky-Tonk Doctors play every Wednesday night after the Double or Nothing lesson. Open since 1972.
Road trips worth making
Central Texas has some of the finest dance halls in the country within a couple hours of Austin. Most host dancing on weekends and for special events - check the schedule before you drive.
Double or Nothing Two-Step teaches honky-tonk two-step at Austin venues throughout the week. Lessons are in a group format on the venue's own floor - you learn in the same room where you will then go out and dance. No partner required at any level.
Donn's Depot — Wednesdays
7:30 pm Beginner Two-Step Lesson
8:30 pm Frank Cavitt and the Honky-Tonk Doctors (live music follows every week)
Private lessons are also available for individuals, couples, and groups. See doubleornothingtwostep.com for details and booking.
The one piece of advice that matters most: wear shoes with a hard, smooth sole. Rubber-soled sneakers grip the floor and make turning nearly impossible. Leather-soled boots or dress shoes make everything easier.
What to expect
A Double or Nothing Two-Step lesson at Sagebrush — the floor fills fast
Read the floor. Some venues have a natural counter-clockwise line of dance; others are too small for it to develop. Watch what the experienced dancers around you are doing and match the room. The one rule that applies everywhere: do not plant yourself in the middle of the floor while couples are trying to move.
Anyone can ask anyone to dance. In Austin's honky-tonk community, asking a stranger to dance is normal and expected. It is polite to accept if you are able. One dance at a time is the convention - you are not committing to the whole night.
Live music starts later than you think. Most bands start at 9 or 10 pm. If you want to arrive for a lesson first and then stay for the band, plan for a 3-4 hour evening. Check tonight's schedule for exact times.
Covers vary. A Thursday night at a small venue might be free. A Friday at the Broken Spoke with a name act might be $20. The schedule at wheretotwostepaustin.com notes current covers for each night.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a partner to go two-stepping in Austin?
No. You do not need to bring a partner to any Austin honky-tonk or to any two-step lesson. Most venues rotate partners during lessons, and the Austin two-step scene is welcoming to solo attendees. Simply show up.
What should I wear to a honky-tonk?
Cowboy boots are ideal for two-stepping because the hard sole lets you slide and turn. If you do not own boots, wear any shoe with a smooth, hard sole - leather dress shoes, loafers, or even hard-soled heels work fine. Avoid rubber-soled sneakers, which grip the floor and make turning difficult. For clothing, Austin honky-tonks are casual. Jeans and a button-down are standard.
Which venues are all-ages?
All-ages Austin honky-tonks include the Broken Spoke (South Lamar), Sagebrush (South Congress), ABGB (South Lamar), Guero's (South Congress), and Jo's Coffee (South Congress). White Horse, Little Longhorn Saloon, Sam's Town Point, Donn's Depot, and the Continental Club are 21+.
How much does it cost to go out dancing in Austin?
Covers typically range from free to $20 depending on the venue and the band. Lesson fees, where separate, range from free to $15. Some nights at Sagebrush and White Horse have no cover. Check tonight's schedule for current cover information.
Is the Broken Spoke open on Sundays?
No. The Broken Spoke is closed Sundays and Mondays. It operates Tuesday through Saturday.
What is the difference between the honky-tonk two-step and other two-steps?
The honky-tonk two-step starts on the SLOW beat - the pattern is slow-slow-quick-quick, beginning on the slow count. Some generic "Texas two-step" instruction teaches a different timing that starts on the quick. In Austin's honky-tonk community, the honky-tonk timing is standard. If you have learned two-step before and your timing never felt quite right, this is likely the reason.
How long does it take to learn to two-step?
The basic step can be learned in a single 60-minute beginner lesson. You will not be polished after one lesson, but you will have the pattern and be able to go out on a dance floor. Most people feel genuinely comfortable after 3-5 lessons and a few nights of social dancing.
Where is the best place to find tonight's live music schedule?
Wheretotwostepaustin.com is updated daily with the full Austin honky-tonk schedule - live bands, lesson times, covers, and age restrictions across all major venues. It is the most complete daily two-step schedule in Austin.
Are there Queer two-step nights in Austin?
Yes. Neon Rainbows teaches Queer Two-Step and Queer Line Dance lessons at Sagebrush on Monday evenings at 7 pm. The Austin two-step community is broadly welcoming across the board.
