Coupland Dance Hall is a working 1890s dance hall in the tiny community of Coupland, about 45 minutes northeast of Austin on TX-95. It's been through cycles of operation and restoration and its current incarnation is one of the best arguments for the Central Texas dance hall tradition still being alive and kicking.
The building itself is remarkable - original wood construction, high ceilings, a proper wooden dance floor that's been in use for over a century. The restoration has been done with respect for the original rather than trying to make it feel modern. When you walk in, you feel the history of the building because it's actually there.
From Austin, the drive takes you northeast through Taylor and into the blackland prairie farmland - flat, wide, and beautiful at dusk. The town of Coupland is tiny; the dance hall is the reason most people know it exists.

The Coupland Dance Hall floor is an original wide-plank wooden floor that has been danced on for over a hundred years. It's a real Texas dance hall floor - responsive, slightly springy, worn smooth by generations of boots. The space is wide enough for serious dancing and the acoustics are what you'd expect from a high-ceilinged wooden building: live and resonant in exactly the right way.
The style here is Texas two-step in its traditional form. The bands that play Coupland play for dancers, the crowd knows it, and the counterclockwise traffic flows naturally. This is not a venue where dancing competes with standing around - dancing is the point.
