You have a group of people, a date, and a reason to celebrate. Whether it's a wedding, a 40th birthday, a family reunion, or a corporate retreat, a private two-step lesson turns a night out into a night people will actually remember. Here's everything you need to know about booking one in Austin.

Why two-step for a group event?

Most group activities in Austin fall into one of two categories: passive (dinners, bar crawls) or performative (escape rooms, axe throwing). Two-step is neither. It's genuinely participatory, genuinely fun, and it works for groups where not everyone knows each other. People arrive strangers and leave friends. That's not marketing - it's the structure of the dance. You rotate partners. You help each other. Nobody's watching - they're too busy trying to keep count.

And for Austin specifically: two-step IS the thing. You can escape-room in Cleveland. You can go axe-throwing in Phoenix. Two-stepping at an Austin honky-tonk is something you can only do here.

What we teach

Double or Nothing Two-Step teaches Austin Honky-Tonk Two-Step - the specific, local, small-dance-floor style that evolved in Austin venues like Sagebrush, Donn's Depot, the White Horse, and the Broken Spoke. It's not ballroom. It's not the big-Texas-dance-hall progressive style. It's the dance you'll actually see when you walk into any Austin honky-tonk on any night of the week.

We're the Austin Chronicle's "Best Two-Stepping Lessons." We have a perfect 5.0 rating on Google across 157 reviews. We teach beginners every week at Donn's Depot and Sagebrush, and we teach private groups of 4 people to 400.

Private group lessons: the basics

How long?

60 to 90 minutes is the sweet spot. Long enough for your group to actually learn the basics, short enough that nobody gets sore or overheated. We can do 30-minute minis for events where the lesson is one piece of a bigger program, and full 2-hour workshops when the lesson is the main event.

How many people?

We've taught groups of 4 and groups of 400. Smaller groups get more individual attention; bigger groups get more energy. There's no group size we can't handle - we just scale the instructor team to match.

Where?

We come to you. Your venue, your home, your Airbnb, your hotel event space, your rehearsal dinner restaurant, or one of our partner honky-tonks if you want the real Austin experience. All we need is a bit of floor space (ideally not carpet) and a way to play music.

What do we need to bring?

Comfortable shoes. Not heels. Not flip-flops. Anything you can pivot on. Boots are amazing but not required. We bring everything else - music, instruction, energy, and the ability to make your group look like they know what they're doing by the end of the session.

Weddings

Wedding first dance private lesson Austin Texas

Austin weddings are our specialty. We work with Austin couples, destination couples, and everyone in between. Common wedding-weekend lessons:

First dance lessons (private couple)

One-on-one with the bride and groom. We choreograph a two-step to your song, teach it to you over 3-5 sessions, and send you down the aisle dancing like you've been doing it for years. Starting 6-12 weeks before the wedding is ideal; we've worked miracles in less.

Rehearsal dinner group lesson

The night before. 45-60 minutes. Everyone learns the basics together. Your out-of-town guests get an Austin experience, your groomsmen stop being nervous about the reception dance floor, and your grandma discovers she can two-step. We've done rehearsal dinners at private homes, rented event spaces, Driftwood Estate, Prospect House, and every South Congress venue you can think of.

Reception group lesson

A short lesson at the start of the reception so everyone hits the floor together. Usually 20-30 minutes. Works especially well for weddings where the couple wants their reception to feel like an Austin honky-tonk.

Birthday parties and milestone celebrations

We've done 30ths, 40ths, 50ths, 60ths, 70ths, and one 90th birthday that remains one of our favorite lessons ever. (She wore boots. She led.)

Birthday two-step lessons work especially well for groups that have outgrown bar-crawling but still want something social and active. We'll come to a rented venue, a private home, or meet your group at a honky-tonk before the night really gets going.

Family reunions

Family reunions are where two-step lessons shine hardest. You have cousins who haven't seen each other in 5 years, uncles who don't know what to do with their hands, and kids who are going to get bored in 12 minutes if nobody gives them an activity. A two-step lesson is the answer.

We've taught reunions with 3 generations on the dance floor, reunions where the grandparents taught the grandkids, and reunions where nobody could believe Uncle Terry had moves like that. The group lesson format means everyone participates regardless of age or ability. Kids pick it up fastest. Grandparents get the biggest applause.

Corporate events, team building, and retreats

Corporate two-step is a different animal. What works: framing it as shared experience, not skill acquisition. What doesn't: treating it like a training workshop.

Our corporate lessons are designed to build connection between coworkers who otherwise wouldn't interact. Nobody's getting graded. The goal is that your engineering team and your sales team have a laughing-at-themselves-together story to tell on Monday.

We've taught corporate groups for SXSW offsites, out-of-town company retreats landing in Austin, holiday parties, conference welcome events, and quarterly team-building. Groups from 15 to 300.

What HR will want to know: We carry liability insurance. We can provide W-9s. We invoice and take PO numbers.

Holiday parties, fundraisers, and special occasions

Christmas parties, end-of-year celebrations, nonprofit galas, anniversary parties, retirement parties, engagement parties. If you're gathering a group and want a memorable activity, the answer is probably two-step.

Bachelor and bachelorette parties

We do teach bachelor and bachelorette parties. But we want to be clear: we teach real Austin Honky-Tonk Two-Step, not a watered-down party version. Your group will actually learn something. Your bride won't leave the lesson and immediately forget it - she'll walk into a honky-tonk that night and actually dance.

Pricing

Every event is different, so we price based on specifics: group size, location, duration, and how many instructors are needed. Ballpark ranges:

  • Small private group (4-15 people, 60 min): $300-$500
  • Medium group (15-40 people, 60-90 min): $500-$900
  • Large group (40-100 people): $900-$1,800
  • Corporate / 100+ attendees / multi-instructor: Custom quote
  • Wedding first dance (couple, 3-5 session package): $350-$600

These are starting ranges, not firm quotes. We send every client a clear written quote with no surprises. Most groups book 2-8 weeks in advance; peak Austin event season (March-June, October-December) books further out.

A few things we've learned over hundreds of events

The first 10 minutes matter most. If you can get your group past the initial "I can't do this" moment, everyone gets into it. We're very good at that first 10 minutes.

Food and drinks before, not during. Eating while dancing doesn't work. Drinking a little before works great. Drinking a lot before makes the lesson less fun for everyone.

Shoes matter more than outfits. You do not need to dress up. You do need to not wear flip-flops.

Everyone thinks they'll be the worst. Almost nobody is. The confidence gain by the end of a good lesson is the real magic.

Let's talk about your event. We've taught thousands of Austin dancers through private group lessons, weddings, corporate retreats, family reunions, birthdays, and every combination in between. If you've got a group of people and a date, we can make it unforgettable.
