Two-Step Lessons in Austin

Every two-step lesson happening in Austin this week. Where to go, when to show up, what to pay. No partner needed.

If you want to learn to two-step in Austin, the good news is that there are free or low-cost lessons at a real honky-tonk almost every night of the week. The better news is that every class is beginner-friendly, partners rotate, and you can be on the dance floor by the end of your first lesson. Here's the complete rundown, updated weekly by the team at Where to Two-Step Austin.

This Week's Two-Step Lessons

All Double or Nothing Two-Step lessons (the team that's been named Best Two-Stepping Lessons by the Austin Chronicle) are listed with full details. Non-DON instructors are noted too.

What to Expect at Your First Class

Every weekly two-step class in Austin runs about the same way. The lesson starts on time and lasts roughly 45 to 60 minutes. The instructor teaches the basic step (slow-slow-quick-quick), works the room into pairs, and rotates partners every few minutes so everyone dances with everyone. By the end of the lesson the band sets up, the floor opens for social dancing, and you put what you just learned into practice with a live country band playing.

You do not need a partner. You do not need prior experience. You do not need to be young or old or coordinated or cool. All levels show up to these classes, and the regulars are used to it.

Which Level Should You Sign Up For?

If you've never two-stepped before, always start with a Beginner class. If you know the basic step and want to work on turns and styling, Intermediate is for you. Advanced classes assume you've been dancing socially for a while and want to refine the technique. If you're not sure, go to Beginner. You can always level up.

The Venues

Sagebrush (South Austin)

Sagebrush is the home of Double or Nothing Two-Step's weekly classes. Tuesday night is a double (Beginner at 6pm, Intermediate at 7pm, $10 cash covers both plus the live music that follows). Sundays are Advanced at 5pm and Intermediate at 6pm, $10 cash. Friday and Saturday nights sometimes have one-off special lessons when a headliner band is booked, so check the weekly schedule.

Donn's Depot (Central Austin)

Wednesday nights at Donn's Depot are a free beginner class at 7:30pm, followed by Frank Cavitt & The Honky-Tonk Doctors at 8:30pm. No cover. The room is tiny, warm, and full of regulars who have been dancing there for decades.

Little Longhorn Saloon (North Central Austin)

Hill Country Two Step runs lessons at the Little Longhorn on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. These are separate from the Double or Nothing classes and have their own schedule.

Sam's Town Point (Far South Austin)

Sam's Town Point has hosted various two-step lessons over the years, including a long-running Thursday beginner class with Double or Nothing. Check the current weekly schedule to confirm what's running this week.

Private Lessons and Corporate / Wedding / Bachelorette Events

If a group class isn't the right fit, or if you have an event coming up (wedding first dance, bachelorette party, corporate team building, birthday party), Double or Nothing Two-Step runs private lessons and custom event packages. Private lessons are the fastest way to get comfortable on a dance floor. Group event packages can accommodate 4 to 400+ guests.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a partner?

No. Every class rotates partners. Show up solo, with a friend, or with a date, it all works.

How much does a class cost?

Weekly Sagebrush classes are $10 cash (lesson + live music). Donn's Depot on Wednesday is free. Private lessons range separately.

Can I just show up?

Yes. No advance RSVP required for the weekly social lessons, though registering at doubleornothingtwostep.com/social-lessons helps the instructors plan.

What if I have two left feet?

You don't. Everyone feels that way before their first class. Two-step is one of the most beginner-friendly partner dances in the country because the basic step is four beats of walking.

What age group shows up?

Everyone. Twenties through seventies at most classes, with a wide mix in between. Broken Spoke is all ages, but most honky-tonks where lessons happen are 21+.

What should I wear?

Something you can move in and leather-soled boots or shoes if you have them. Rubber soles grab the floor and make turns harder. Jeans and a t-shirt are fine. Sundresses too.

Is there a difference between Austin two-step and Texas two-step?

Yes. Texas Two-Step is the traditional big-dance-hall version with lots of travel around the floor. Austin Honky-Tonk Two-Step is adapted for tight bar floors with more turns, more pivots, and rhythm variations. If you'll be dancing at Austin honky-tonks, learn the Austin style.
