The Honest Take
What it's actually like
Mercer Dance Hall is a working Hill Country dance hall in Dripping Springs, about 30 minutes southwest of Austin on Highway 290. The venue closed for a stretch and then reopened, and the current operation has gotten serious about being a real Texas dance hall again - real bookings, real dancers, real respect for the floor.
What sets Mercer apart is the floor itself. Fans who travel the Central Texas dance hall circuit consistently rank it among the best wooden dance floors in the region. It's responsive, the size is right for serious two-stepping, and the room sounds good. Add a touring Texas country band on a Friday or Saturday and you have what dance halls are supposed to feel like.
From Austin, the drive is easy - take 290 west through the edge of the Hill Country, exit at Dripping Springs. The dance hall sits right in town on Mercer Street.
The Dance Floor
Two-stepping at Mercer Dance Hall
The Mercer Dance Hall floor is a wide wooden floor with the right amount of give for two-stepping. Fans regularly call it one of the best dance floors in the area, and the bookings reflect that - Mercer's calendar leans toward acts whose audiences are actually there to dance. Dale Watson plays here. Jake Penrod plays here. The room is set up so the floor takes priority over the seating, which is exactly what you want in a dance hall.
The style is Texas two-step in its classic form - counterclockwise around the floor, smooth lead and follow, plenty of room for the experienced dancers to do their thing while beginners learn the line of dance. The vibe is welcoming. If you're newer to two-stepping, the Friday lessons take care of that before the band starts.
