Texas · Church Picnics · Heritage Dances
Texas church picnics and Czech and German heritage celebrations are some of the best partner dancing in the state, and most people never hear about them. Polka, waltz, and two-step on wooden floors, run by parishes and fraternal communities, many for over a hundred years. Here is where to find them, grouped by region so you know the drive. Here is what to expect. These are family events, all ages, usually on parish grounds or in a community hall. There is almost always a plate lunch (fried chicken or Czech sausage and sauerkraut), an auction, games for kids, and a dance. The dance is the point for us. A Czech band or a country band plays polkas, waltzes, and two-steps, and everyone dances, from little kids to great-grandparents.
No partner needed and no fancy clothes required. Bring cash for the plate and the raffle, come hungry, and do not be shy about asking someone to dance. That is how it works. Many of these picnics raise the money that keeps a 100-year-old parish hall standing, so what you spend goes to a good place.
Want lessons before you go? Double or Nothing Two-Step teaches two-step, polka, and waltz around Austin.
A parish picnic, a homecoming, a fraternal hall dance. If there is real dancing, we want it on the list.
