The Honest Take
What it's actually like
Anhalt Hall is one of the most historically significant dance halls in Texas. Built in the late 1800s by German immigrant settlers, it's a reminder that the Texas dance hall tradition was born partly from European community gathering customs transplanted to the Hill Country. The German settlers who built these halls were making a home, and dancing was how they did it together.
The hall is in Spring Branch in Comal County, about 50 miles north of San Antonio and roughly an hour and a half from Austin. It operates on a scheduled event basis - it's not open nightly, but the community events that happen here are genuine and deeply rooted in the place's history.
The building itself is a treasure. Original construction, preserved rather than renovated into something smooth. The dance floor is the original wood. The ceiling is high and the acoustics are what you get in an old wooden hall - live and resonant in a way modern construction can't match.
The Dance Floor
Two-stepping at Anhalt Hall
The Anhalt Hall floor is original wide-plank wood from the late 1800s. It's a traditional dance hall floor in the truest sense - built before amplified music existed, designed for the community to gather and dance to a fiddle and an accordion. That lineage is present every time someone two-steps on it.
Events at Anhalt tend toward traditional Texas country and polka-influenced music, reflecting the German-Texan musical heritage of the area. Both two-step and Texas polka (different from European polka, danced similarly to two-step) happen here.
