Visitor's guide to
two-stepping in Austin

Austin has live honky-tonk music and two-stepping every single night of the week. Here is everything you need to know to make the most of it as a visitor.

Why Austin is special for this

Austin has a live country music and dance hall tradition that goes back generations. The Broken Spoke has been open since 1964. The Hill Country dance halls go back further than that. This is not a tourist attraction that got dressed up for visitors - it is the real thing, a living local culture that happens to be very welcoming to outsiders who show up with good intentions and boots.

What makes Austin different from Nashville or other country music cities is the social dancing component. Austin has a strong partner dance community. People go out specifically to dance - not just to listen - and that makes every night more interactive and more memorable.

The three venues every visitor should know

Broken Spoke

The most iconic Austin honky-tonk, open since 1964. A true Texas dance hall on South Lamar. Dinner in the restaurant before 9pm, then the dancehall opens. House two-step lessons Wednesday through Saturday before the band starts. All ages, $10-15 cover in the dancehall. Bring cash.

Sagebrush

South Central Austin's best dance venue - multiple outdoor stages, strong dancing crowd, and Double or Nothing Two-Step lessons on Tuesdays and Sundays. If you want to take a lesson and then dance right after, this is your spot. $10 cover on lesson nights.

White Horse

East Austin's beloved honky-tonk - live music every single night, $5-10 cover, serious but welcoming dancing crowd. The vibe is a little more East Austin eclectic than South Lamar classic, but the dancing is real.

Should I take a lesson before I go?

Yes - even one lesson makes an enormous difference. Not because you will be judged, but because knowing the basic footwork pattern means you can actually participate instead of watching from the sidelines. Most people get the basics in an hour.

Double or Nothing Two-Step - Austin's Honky-Tonk Dance School - runs public beginner lessons every Tuesday at 6pm and Wednesday at 7:30pm. Drop in, no reservation required (RSVP helps). Cover includes the lesson and the live music after.

If you want a private lesson before your trip or on arrival, book a private session.

When to go

Best nights for visitors: Tuesday and Wednesday are ideal for first-timers. Lessons happen, the crowd is manageable, and experienced dancers are happy to dance with beginners. Weekends are more crowded and faster-paced.

Best time to arrive: Early. The floor is less crowded before 9pm and it is much easier to get comfortable, find a spot, and actually practice what you are learning. By 10pm on a Friday, the floor is packed.

Hill Country day trips: If you have a car, Gruene Hall in New Braunfels (45 min) and Luckenbach Texas outside Fredericksburg (75 min) are both worth the drive. Texas's oldest and most legendary dance halls respectively. Check the full schedule for what is happening any given weekend.
