South Austin Guide

South Austin
honky-tonks

South Lamar and South Congress are the heart of Austin's live country music scene. Here is every venue worth knowing, what makes each one right for different nights, and when to go.

Broken Spoke

2201 S Lamar Blvd  ·  All ages  ·  Restaurant free, Dancehall $10-15 cash

The anchor of South Austin's honky-tonk scene, open since 1964. There is no other venue in Austin with this much history on the walls and this much intention on the floor. A proper Texas dance hall - not a bar that happens to have dancing, but a room built for it. Dinner in the restaurant starts at 6pm Tuesday through Saturday. The dancehall opens at 9pm (8pm Tuesdays) with house two-step lessons before the band. Live music runs late.

Best nights: Friday and Saturday for the liveliest crowds; Tuesday for the most manageable floor. See the weekly schedule for who is playing.

Sagebrush

5765 TX-290 W  ·  21+  ·  $10-20 cash

South Central Austin's best current dance venue. Multi-stage outdoor complex that books serious Texas country acts and maintains a strong social dancing culture. Double or Nothing Two-Step teaches here every Tuesday (6pm Beginner, 7pm Intermediate) and Sunday (5pm Advanced, 6pm Intermediate), making it the best spot in Austin to learn and immediately practice.

The hardwood dance floor is the best in Austin - real slide, right amount of give, built for two-stepping. The crowd on lesson nights specifically draws dancers, which makes it more welcoming for beginners than a typical bar night.

Continental Club

1315 S Congress Ave  ·  21+  ·  ~$10 cash

A South Congress institution since 1957. Tighter and more intimate than a traditional dance hall - a music room first, dancing second. The floor is smaller but the dancing is real. Best for nights when the lineup is explicitly country or Western; check the schedule because programming varies widely.

ABGB

1305 W Oltorf St  ·  All ages  ·  No cover

Sunday afternoon country and Americana in a relaxed all-ages setting. The beer is brewed on-site, the patio is comfortable, and the vibe is low-key neighborhood hangout rather than serious dance night. Great for a Sunday afternoon before heading to Sagebrush for the evening lesson.

Guero's Taco Bar

1412 S Congress Ave  ·  All ages  ·  No cover

Weekend afternoon live music on the patio. All ages, no cover, good tacos. Not a dance venue in the traditional sense, but a regular country and Americana lineup and a lively outdoor space. Good for an early evening start before moving on to a dedicated dance venue.

Highball

1120 S Lamar Blvd  ·  21+  ·  Varies

A retro venue on South Lamar that books country and Western acts and has a dance floor. More upscale than a traditional honky-tonk, which gives it a different energy. Worth checking when the lineup is right.
