Broken Spoke Guide

Is Broken Spoke
good for beginners?

The honest answer, from people who have danced there hundreds of times: yes - with a few things to know first.

The short answer

Yes. Broken Spoke is welcoming to beginners and has been for 60 years. The culture is not hostile to newcomers - it was built around the idea that dancing is for everyone. But there are a few things to know that will make your first visit much better.

What to do as a beginner

Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday

The weeknight floors are less crowded and move at a more manageable pace. Friday and Saturday nights can be packed and fast - harder to navigate if you are still working on the basics. Tuesday especially tends to have a more neighborhood-local crowd and a more patient floor.

Take the house lesson first

Broken Spoke offers house two-step lessons Wednesday through Saturday before the band starts - typically around 8pm, with dancing beginning at 9pm. These are beginner-friendly and will give you enough to work with on the floor. You do not need prior experience to benefit from them.

Start near the center of the floor

The outer edge of the floor moves counter-clockwise and carries the experienced dancers traveling at speed. Beginners belong toward the center, where the pace is slower and there is more room to practice. Watch the traffic pattern for one song before you step on - you will see it immediately.

Ask for dances

The best way to improve is to dance with experienced partners, and the best way to do that is to ask. Say "I'm a beginner, but want to dance?" - almost everyone says yes, and an experienced lead or follow can make a beginner look good.

What makes Broken Spoke welcoming

James White, who founded Broken Spoke in 1964, built it around the belief that dancing was for working Texans - not for polished performers or status-seekers. That ethos is still in the walls. The regulars are not trying to intimidate anyone. They are there to dance, and they generally enjoy seeing new people discover something they love.

The house lessons exist specifically because Broken Spoke wants beginners to succeed. The staff is friendly and used to first-timers. The restaurant side - free to enter with live music in the background - is a comfortable way to get a feel for the place before committing to the dancehall cover.

Get a lesson before you go

The single thing that will make your Broken Spoke experience better is having the basic footwork pattern before you walk in. Even one lesson changes everything - instead of watching from the edge, you can get on the floor immediately.

Double or Nothing Two-Step - Austin's Honky-Tonk Dance School - teaches beginner lessons every Tuesday at 6pm and Wednesday at 7:30pm at other Austin venues. Take a lesson one of those nights, then go to Broken Spoke the same week or the week after. You will have a completely different experience.
