Austin Venue Comparison

Broken Spoke vs
White Horse

The two most talked-about honky-tonks in Austin. Both are great. They are not the same. Here is how to choose.

The short version

Go to Broken Spoke for the iconic Texas dance hall experience - the history, the room, the ritual of dinner then dancing. It is the quintessential Austin honky-tonk.

Go to White Horse for live music every night, lower cover, and an East Austin energy that is a little more accessible as a first-timer on a random Tuesday.

Both are worth going to. They complement each other rather than compete.

Broken Spoke

2201 S Lamar Blvd  ·  All ages  ·  Restaurant free, Dancehall $10-15 cash

Open since 1964. The last of the true Texas dance halls - a statement that James White, the founder, made in all seriousness and that the building lives up to. The memorabilia on the walls is real. The floor is purpose-built for dancing. The experience of showing up, having dinner, and then walking into the dancehall when the band starts is something Austin does not replicate anywhere else.

Best for: First-time visitors who want the quintessential experience. Couples on a date. People who want the full ritual - dinner, dancehall, live band. Anyone who wants to understand what Austin's dance hall culture actually is.

Less ideal for: Beginners who want a low-pressure first night (the floor can be serious on busy nights). Anyone who needs easy parking.

White Horse

500 Comal St  ·  21+  ·  $5-10 cash

Open every night, lower cover, more accessible energy. White Horse does not have the history of Broken Spoke, but it has something equally valuable: consistency. Live music seven nights a week, a crowd that is genuinely there to dance, and a no-pretense East Austin vibe that makes it easy to walk in alone and have a good time.

Best for: Weeknight dancing when you just want to go out. People new to the scene who want a lower-stakes introduction. Anyone who wants live music on a random Tuesday without committing to the full Broken Spoke experience.

Less ideal for: Weekend beginners (the floor gets packed and fast). Anyone who needs parking (it is notoriously tight).

How they compare

What about Sagebrush?

If you are specifically looking for the best place to take a lesson and then dance right after, neither Broken Spoke nor White Horse is the answer - Sagebrush is. Double or Nothing Two-Step teaches there every Tuesday and Sunday, and the crowd that comes on those nights is specifically there to dance. It is the best venue in Austin for that specific experience.
